Jimmy Gandevia, '64, Feb 14 2011
Just came to know of Jimmy Gandevia's demise about a week ago. He was diagnosed with thyroid cancer sometime ago. He belonged to the '64 batch. Most old timers will remember his corner house, next the DC's bungalow, now occupied by Amitava Bakshi (ICSE 1980). When returning home from school, remember often seeing him in the CH Area Durga Puja ground with a few other friends.
He was senior executive at the Tata Steel Rural Development Society based at Tata Centre, Kolkata. He had just retired and shifted to Mumbai.
Mehernosh Batliwala, '80, remembers his "quirky sense of humour which worked wonderfully for him in many of Mrs. Mattoo's plays he took part in years ago".
Niroop Mahanty, '67, a friend of Jimmy's for many decades, fondly recollected him with the following words "And, what an actor; had everyone in splits with his stage performances. Very reminiscent of Manuel in 'Faulty Towers'".
"I’m sure he will rest in peace. Good people do".
M. Zachariah, Teacher, Jan 14 2010
Mrs. M. Zachariah, who was the class teacher of Std IIC, passed away on Jan 14, 2010. She was in the school in 50s and most of the 70s. She also taught English in higher classes.
Mehernosh Batliwala, '80, had this to say when he heard of the sad news:
This is sad news for all of us ex-students of Loyola High. May her departed soul rest in eternal peace and may the Almighty grant all her family members the strength to bear the loss of their beloved. Another stalwart and an inseparable part of our Alma mater has gone forever from our midst and left us that much poorer.
I remember her as a kiddo, although she actually did not teach me, as the class teacher of a class situated at the end of the corridor on the ground floor leading to the then cycle-shed. She was tall, quite imposing and of a very pleasing manner. A very dignified lady she was.
Let us all pray sincerely for her tonight before going to sleep. Her memories will live with us Loyoleans till it is our time.
She is survived by a son and daughter who are settled in the US.
