Frank McGauley Dear Friends of Loyola, Congratulations on the Golden Jubilee of Loyola! Congratulations to the teachers, the parents, the benefactors, the Tata Company and my fellow Jesuits who have made it all possible! My first experience at Loyola was my period of Regency, 1950-52. Fr. Carrol I. Fasy, S.J., our “Father Superior” and Rector, set the tone for those days. We loved to watch him stand on the stage of the old clubhouse which was our school and with dramatic flair address the Assembly: “The Loyola boy is known, not so much for his uniform of cloth, but for his uniform of behaviour”.
Carrol Fasy I can still remember every face and every name of my first class Standard V. It was a League of Religions: Hindus, Moslems, Sikhs, Parsis (Zoroastrians), Buddhists, Christians — Protestant, Orthodox, Eastern and Latin Rite Catholics. Yet there was real friendship with genuine respect, affection and helpfulness to one another. As I think back, I wonder why we cannot get along like that in our world today! We were struggling with limited resources in those days. Bernie Pereira and I would roll the cricket pitch with a borrowed roller. At one point we only had one good cricket bat. The other was taped. However, we had nationally-ranked players in Everest Britto, and the De Vitre brothers, Mickey and Kushroo. Yet Sports Day was our big extravaganza: Wei Te Kun led the parade and came away with most of the prizes. At this same time the builder of the new Loyola, Fr. Francis “Mighty Mac” McFarland was drawing up the blueprints for the magnificent quadrangle building which graces the campus today. My second experience at Loyola was as Rector-Principal (1970-1976). From 140, the school had grown to 1400. Our results were just about the best in the country. Loyola is people and we were blessed with some great ones: - The Science Department was fabulous. Who could ever match the dedication of Mr. Arun Narasimham in Biology, of Fr. Edward Dineen, Fr. Edgar Graham and Mr. C. Natarajan in Mathematics, the devotion of Mrs. Padma Avasthi in Chemistry, the long hours in the Physics Lab. of Fr. Simon Kirsch and Mr. Balram Rai?
- Mrs. Freni A. Irani gifted all students with a respect for the Library and books and initiated a great love for reading.
- Fr. Eugene Power and Fr. Anthony P. Roberts: I was always convinced that these two “Jesuit greats” were the best English teachers in the country. Fr. Power was unsurpassed in training national elocutionists and producing dramas on the Loyola stage.
Francis McFarland - Mr. Rama Shankar Pandey was our ‘Guru’ and prolific writer; the Narangs lifted the teaching of Hindi to a new level.
- Mrs. Coomi Siganporia, Mrs. Dhun Gocal, Mrs. Mandeep Singh and so Francis McFarland many others gave beautiful examples of personal dignity in their own lives and a sincere caring for their students.
- The KG and Primary School teachers made their classes a delight. The children loved to be there. And no one could match the record of Pretty Patel who never missed a class in almost 50 years of teaching.
Edward Dineen Sri Ramananda Bhattacharjee led the students in developing social consciousness and a respect and love for the poor through his projects around the city and in the Bustees.- Fr. Robert Dullahan and Fr. Anthony Roberts stood outside the gates of Tisco Works and passed out leaflets announcing the opening of a Hindi section at Loyola and inviting workers of low income to apply for admission. It was part of our outreach to the poor.
- Mr. Deryk Philipsz-Ward began the Scout Movement; Mrs. Hilla Khory and Mrs. bibirani Duggal led the cubs. Their spirit affected every assembly.
- Two powerful forces on the playing fields, in the hostel and in the classrooms were the charismatic Fr. Emile Coelho, who brought his cheerful encouragement and vigoorous energy to every activity, and the strong and steady Fr. Hilary Lobo who brought his gifts of organization and discipline to the hostel and school.
Simon Kirsch There is a danger of mentioning these few names bacuse so manu wonderful teachers and administrators are omitted. The list could go on and on:- Mr. Philip Allencherry, Mr. Reynold C. D'Souza, Mr. George Vellapani, Mrs. Rose D'Souza, Mrs. Mary Zachariah, Mrs Gladys Mathews, Mr. P. C. Thomas, Miss Helen Kempster, Miss Iola Gabriel and many others.Loyola has a great history because of the greatness of these teachers, the loyolty of the students and the support of parents arid benefactors. My third experience was in 1992 when I went back as a visitor. I found Loyola was bigger and better than ever. The Loyola band marched me into the Quadrangle and I sat on the stage overwhelmed by the beautiful memories of the past but even more by the expanded co-educational Loyola of today. Fr. Charles Pereira, Rector (1988-93) provided the stability. Fr. Pius Fernandes, Principal (1992-2002) has instilled his dynamic enthusiasm into the new Loyola and he has led them where we feared to tread even in our dreams. I am proud to be part of the memories of this Institution. Jai Loyola! Jai Hind! Jai Yesu! Sincerely, Frank H. McGauley, S.J. Hallowed Portals |
