Philip Allencherry
Philip Allencherry
(May 9, 1931 —May 11, 1976)

As an English teacher, Hostel Prefect, Moderator ofJai Loyola, Head of the English Department, Moderator of Loyola Dramatics Society, Vice- Principal of Loyola School, Mr. Philip Allencherry, spent a memorable 18 years at Loyola, endearing himself to the Loyola family before God took him away from us. Philip, had joined Loyola in 1958, and assisted the Administration both in School and in the Hostel.

Meticulous in his own life, he insisted on order and strict self control in his students, he always tried his best to understand their problems and was there always to help them in their needs. Even during holidays, Philip could be seen in the then school auditorium guiding and training students for staging school plays. He was almost wedded to the school and the students.

God’s ways are strange. While he was taking the Loyola team on an excursion to the Kashmir Valley, during the summer holidays in 1976, his call came. After getting his students and their luggage off the train, at Jullunder, Philip had got back in the train to check if there was any piece of luggage left behind, and when alighting, he slipped and got caught between the train and the platform. The train which had slowly begun to move dragged him a few meters before he could be pulled up. It was around 4.20 A.M. He died in the Jullunder Cant. Hospital around 10.00 AM of a broken pelvis and internal injuries, leaving his family and all who knew him, in tears.

During the 18 years Mr. Allencherry spent at Loyola, he has guided many new teachers who joined school, taught English and History, directed plays, compered numberless functions and supervised numerous school contests. The students of the 60’s and 70’s remember him for his tenderness and concern. His dedication and devotedness to his profession, his sense of humour and patience and selfless service to others are fondly remembered. He was truly a Man for Others. The Allencherry Award instituted by the Jesuit Provincial of Jamshedpur, bears witness to that.
