The academic year is coming to a close and we have much to thank the good Lord for and much to reflect upon.
As usual our students have displayed all round excellence – in academics, co-curricular activities, sports and social service. The ICSE and ISC results gave us much cheer about. A few lucky ones made it to the IITs, a few got into Universities in the United Kingdom and the United States of America and the rest have made it to premier universities around the country. With every experience we gain some learning. The feedback we get from the students who seek admission in premier colleges is that apart from mere academics, a lot of stress is laid on co-curricular activities and leadership skills. Despite colleges coming out with 100% marks as cut-off, they still look for evidence of participation in co-curricular activities. Therefore those who have been involved in these activities stand at an advantage over the others. The students of Loyola are privileged in the sense that they are given infinite opportunities to organize and participate in activities throughout the year. It is disheartening to see many students who are academically bright, hesitate to participate in such activities giving the excuse that they will hamper in their studies. Time management is a must and students must be encouraged by the parents to come forward and make optimum use of the opportunities given to them.
Last year we had introduced Educomp Smart Classes at the Senior Section and encouraged by the positive response we got we shall be introducing the same at the Junior Section in the coming academic year. Since it is expensive to maintain these classes, we have had to charge a minimal Technology Fee. These classes are making the teaching learning experience a lot more interesting and interactive. We invite the parents of the junior school to come and witness how these classes are being held. They can come on any day during the week commencing 1st April 2013 during class hours.
At the risk of sounding like a parrot, I am forced to touch on the topic of student stress. Loyola is one of the few schools to have a full time Counselor on its rolls. You are requested to make full use of her services. Let us not have any inhibitions in approaching a Counselor. Even parents and teachers can seek her guidance if they face a problematic situation which they find difficult to handle alone. This is one issue which has to be addressed jointly by the parents, students themselves and the teachers.
Continuing with our initiative of introducing an international dimension into the curriculum, we have had a number of very exciting and enriching activities during the year. The students of the Junior Section put up an outstanding show “Travelogue” where they took the audience on a whirlwind tour of the world. It was a great learning experience for all, they learnt more than any text book could ever teach them.
We have had a flourishing partnership with Oriel High School in the United Kingdom and two of their teachers were at Loyola last week as part of a reciprocal exchange visit. The visit has enabled us to share our best practices with them.
This year we have 216 students appearing for the ICSE Exams and 177 students for the ISC Exams. Please join me in wishing them all success in the exams.
